What is wrong with people today? That question came to mind yesterday after our weekly staff meeting.

One of my co-workers had recently one a quarterly award though it was not known through out much of the staff. He pretty much played it down and did not tell anybody, since the formal announcement will come a week later. An individual congratulated him on his accomplishment and then a senior staff member looked shocked and exclaimed “You won what?” along with a look of pure disgust on his face.

WTF? What is so bad about somebody getting recognized for hard work? I mean unless he was knocking the senior staff members wife’s shoes back or something just as ridiculous, why the big problem. Somebody in the organization obviously thought the award was merited and submitted him to the pool of candidates. To make matters even more absurd it there is no pay raise, no day off pretty much nothing, just the recognition and a pat on the back.

It is great that individuals are recognized for accomplishments in today’s business environment. It is very easy to slam somebody for making a mistake but God help us if we tell somebody “Nice job on that _____” (Fill in the blank)

All I got to say is “Screw ‘em then” if you can't stand to see somebody get recognized for hard work then maybe it is time for a little self introspection - SD

I have to agree. It seems that there are some people who don't want to see anyone but themselves ackowledged on the job. Perhaps they feel that they are being threatened.

What they have to realize is that it takes more than one person doing a good job for the enterprise to be successful.
